Gagarin Avenue in Kiev was renamed in honor of Ukrainian cosmonaut Kadenyuk

Yuri Gagarin Avenue in Kiev was renamed in honor of Ukraine’s first and only cosmonaut Leonid Kadenyuk. It should be noted that the street name was chosen by rating the electronic vote.

It is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the Kiev City Council. Over 21,000 citizens supported naming the avenue after Kadenyuk.

Recall that the renaming of streets and the dismantling of monuments in Ukraine began in 2015. According to the mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, 16 streets of the city were renamed in March. The country also passed a law on decommunization, which provides for a total ban on Soviet symbols, requires authorities to dismantle monuments to leaders and politicians of the time of the USSR.
