Interfax: WSJ reporter Gershkovich accused of spying

Evan Gershkovich, a reporter with the Wall Street Journal’s Moscow bureau, was charged with espionage. This is reported by Interfax with reference to a source.

“Gershkovich has been charged,” the source said.

The journalist is charged with committing a crime under article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Espionage”).

According to investigators, acting on the instructions of the American side, Gershkovich collected information constituting “a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex”.

Journalist Gershkovich, an American citizen born in 1991, was arrested at the end of March in Yekaterinburg “while trying to obtain secret information”. The Lefortovo court in Moscow arrested him until May 29. US President Joe Biden has called on Russian authorities to release Gershkovich.
