Erdogan’s spokesman says Sweden must meet counter-terrorism condition to join NATO

April 15, 2023

The Turkish President’s official representative, Ibrahim Kalin, said that Sweden would only join NATO if the previously announced condition on joint counterterrorism was met. He made this statement on the tv100 television channel.

“Their logic (of the Swedish authorities) is as follows: an organization that does not attack Sweden is not a terrorist organization. I told them: “We don’t want anything illegal and against custom, we just say get rid of terrorists in your country,” Erdogan’s spokesman said.

Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Sweden was not yet ready to join NATO.
