Scottish Prime Minister Yousaf has sought permission from Sunak for a referendum on the country’s independence
The Daily Telegraph reports that Scottish First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) Hamza Yousaf, in his first meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday, asked him for permission to hold a second referendum on the independence of the country.
According to the publication, in a conversation with the Prime Minister, Yousaf expressed hope that he would respect the “democratic aspirations” of the Scottish Parliament, giving it the power to hold a plebiscite. It should be noted that independence from the UK is the main objective of the SNP, which has controlled the Scottish Parliament since 2007.
The newspaper clarified that in response to Yusaf’s request, Sunak proposed instead of a referendum to work together to reduce the cost of living in the UK. As reported in The Daily Telegraph, the meeting between Yusaf and Sunak lasted about 20 minutes in total.
