Akkuyu nuclear power plant will bring Russia more than 4 billion dollars a year

April 28, 2023

Russia’s Akkuyu nuclear power plant, built in Turkey, will provide state-owned Rosatom with significant profits over the next 60 years. According to experts, the plant will produce about 35 billion kWh annually, which will generate revenues of up to $4.3 billion per year.

The Akkuyu nuclear power plant was built and maintained by Russian specialists, so Rosatom will receive almost all the profits from its operation. According to the terms of the 2017 Russian-Turkish agreement, during the first 15 years the cost of electricity from nuclear power plants will be 12.35 US cents per 1 kWh, about 6 times higher than domestic prices. electricity in Russia.

Thanks to the construction of Akkuyu, the state-owned company Rosatom has created a new model for optimizing electricity exports, which will ensure good profits and increase tax payments to the Russian budget. Ankara, in turn, will receive additional power generation capacity for domestic consumption at prices below European prices. By 2028, the Akkuyu nuclear power plant will supply 10% of Turkey’s electricity needs, which will reduce gas imports by $1.5 billion per year.

The importance of the nuclear power plant for the Turkish economy is evidenced by the fact that the slightly ill President Recep Tayyip Erdogan participated in the nuclear fuel transfer ceremony in Akkuyu. As Anadolu news agency later reported, talks about building two more nuclear power plants in Turkey will start in the near future.
