Libya.. Air traffic controllers threaten to “paralyze air traffic”

A few days ago, the General Union of Air Traffic Controllers announced the entry of sit-in observers and an open strike, which will lead to the suspension of all air traffic control services, and the cessation of navigation traffic in all airports.

According to what was reported by a source of observers on the site “Sky News Arabia”, the strike “is the expression of their dissatisfaction with the non-increase of their wages and the bad situation they are suffering from the not being included in the unified salary scale, like the rest of the bodies affiliated with the Civil Aviation Authority.”

More specifically, their demands are as follows:

Increase wages, improve working environment, license insurance and health insurance. Join the unified pay scale. Separation of the Air Traffic Control Department from the Civil Aviation Authority. Pay the financial dues and solve the financial problems they are going through. Disbursement and consideration of the license premium and eligibility due. Provide adequate food and accommodation to air traffic controllers and their assistants working on rotation. Provide many needs for navigation devices.

Communication with the ministry

The source, who declined to be named, called on the responsible authorities to consider these requests and to meet them, as they are “their legitimate rights”.

The source confirmed that the General Union of Air Traffic Controllers contacted a group of transport officials, including the transport minister of the outgoing government of Abdul Hamid al-Dabaiba, to resolve all their problems.

At the same time, he stressed: “If we do not reach a solution to this crisis, we will stop providing air services, and therefore navigation will stop at all airports in the country.”

In the same context, the director of the Relations and Information Office of the Airports Authority in Libya, Ahmed Al-Ratil, confirmed to “Sky News Arabia” that air traffic is continuing and that the work of the airport are going well, adding: “We have not received any official warnings related to a strike or a suspension of work.” airports or stopovers.

He commented on the financial crisis experienced by air traffic controllers, saying: “They are administratively and financially affiliated with the Civil Aviation Authority, so we have no information on their salaries.”

Observers have already gone on strike more than once, demanding higher wages and better work equipment to keep flights and passengers safe.
