Charles, 74, will be crowned at Westminster Abbey in London on May 6 in a grand ceremony in which he will wear or be presented with special ceremonial dress adorned with religious and historical symbols.
Buckingham Palace said on Monday that many of the items that will be used in the ceremony, such as crowns and sceptres, date back centuries, adding that Charles will also wear some of the clothes that have appeared in coronation ceremonies since 1821. “for the sake of durability and quality”.
Among the pieces that will reappear is the coronation glove made for his grandfather, George VI.
“We have this wonderful, eco-friendly king (who advocates) sustainability, reusing rather than having a new glove,” said Deborah Moore, CEO of Dentis, who designed the gold-embroidered glove for the coronation of George VI in 1937.
Charles will also wear his grandfather’s white linen robe and sword belt, once again eschewing the tradition of making a new one.
He will also wear other ancestral garments at coronation ceremonies dating back a millennium, including a long-sleeved golden silk coat cut at the coronation of King George V, great-grandfather of King Charles, and worn by the subsequent monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth.
He will also wear the Imperial Sash, made of gold cloth and originally designed for use at the coronation of King George IV in 1821.
