A group of scientists from the Bocconi University in Milan analyzed how the loss of a job affects the chances of having a baby in a couple.
The results of scientific work were published in The Journal of Marriage and Family. Analyzing the data, the researchers found a pronounced relationship in couples with an average income.
It turned out that the loss of a job has a profound negative psychosocial impact on a person and, accordingly, leads to financial stress, loss of social status, loneliness, and even a decrease in self-esteem. According to scientists, this is associated with stress, anxiety and depression.
To prove their hypothesis in practice, the researchers studied data from large-scale annual family surveys in Germany and the UK, analyzing 15,000 volunteers. They were divided into two groups: those who experienced an unexpected loss of earnings and those who did not face such a problem.
In addition, the researchers tracked whether study participants became pregnant at least a month after they lost their jobs. The results were interesting.
According to them, couples in which women lost their jobs were less likely to conceive a child within five years of being fired. In those families where men were left without work, a similar effect persisted, but lasted somewhat less, writes Gazeta.ru .
