A statement released by the ministry said the Polish aircraft was on a routine patrol with Romanian border guards for Frontex when it was intercepted by “aggressive and dangerous maneuvers” carried out repeatedly by a Russian Su- 35.
The press release adds that with the occurrence of the accident, NATO put the Romanian and Spanish planes participating in the mission “on high alert”, before the Polish crew could land it safely.
The ministry said the accident happened “in international airspace over the Black Sea”, 60 km east of Romanian airspace.
Bucharest considered the incident “further proof of the Russian Federation’s provocative approach to the Black Sea”.
The Polish aircraft was deployed to Romania on April 19 and is expected to remain there until May as part of a Frontex mission organized by Romania which also includes Spain and Sweden.
