Researchers at the Tyumen Medical University have discovered and described three new types of blood-sucking ticks that can carry diseases such as plague and fever.
The study was conducted by experts who concluded that the parasites were common in Siberia and Mongolia.
Spinturnicidae and Macronyssidae are two families of parasites. Spinturnicides are associated with bartonellosis, and members of the second family suffer from numerous natural focal infections, including tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), borreliosis and plague, said Maria Orlova, associate professor at Tyumen Medical University.
In 2020, one tick was found in the collections of the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University in alcohol. The rest were collected in vivo from bats caught in Buryatia and Tuva and then released into the wild.
Scientists emphasize that these mites are not similar to any of the previously described. Apparently, they live in the southern part of Russia and, presumably, in China, writes RIA News .
