– Published on:

The Egyptian Mobilization and Statistics Authority confirmed that divorce cases nationwide, according to the latest census for the year 2021, amounted to 254,777 divorce cases, compared to the previous year. , which had recorded the registration of 222,039 divorce cases.

Egypt’s high divorce rate is attributed by Sherine Taha, a sociology professor at Ain Shams University, to a number of factors, the most important of which is a lack of patience in choosing a life partner, which leads the couple to end the relationship, especially the first year of marriage, during which the divorce rate rises to over 65%.

In his interview with Sky News Arabia, Taha confirmed:

Social networking sites are among the reasons that have led to an increase in divorce rates in Egypt and in a large number of countries, and have caused great crises on the part of spouses, due to constant comparisons with others. Financial burdens, husband’s inability to support the family, accumulation of debts and inability to pay are some of the reasons for the rising divorce rate in Egypt. Differences in inclinations, educational and social levels are among the reasons that end marital relations, especially in the early years. Sometimes the parents control the life of the spouses and their total interference in their life choices and decisions ultimately leads to separation.

What do the numbers say?

According to the latest statistics from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and statistics released in 2021, marriage contracts have reached that Egypt has registered 880,041 marriages. Cairo Governorate leads the Egyptian governorates in terms of the highest percentage of divorce cases. The increase in the divorce rate was evident among young people in the 25 to 35 age group, by 19.8%. The lowest divorce rate was in the 18 to under 20 age group, at 0.2%. The number of divorce cases in urban Egypt reached 144,305, accounting for 56.6% of the total divorce cases. The number of divorce cases in rural areas reached 110,472, or 43.4%.

“Affection” to preserve the Egyptian family

In recent years, Egypt has set up the national Egyptian family preservation project, “Mawada”, through which it seeks to support young people who are about to marry with the necessary knowledge and expertise. to start a family, develop family support and counseling mechanisms, and resolve disputes, thus helping to reduce divorce rates.

Through the project, Egypt seeks to achieve a number of objectives, the most important of which are:

Provide basic knowledge to people about to marry (basics for choosing a life partner – rights and duties – parenting skills – marital and economic problems of the family and its management – reproductive health). Improve family support and counseling services to help newlyweds and low-compatibility couples. Activate family dispute resolution agencies, to play their part in reducing divorce cases. Revise legislation that supports the family unit and preserves the rights of spouses and children.

The absence of the concept of family

Dr. Muhammad Sharif Al-Dasouki, a consultant in family relations and psychological counseling, believes that the mother has a major role in the premarital period in terms of nurturing the concept of family, and what she accepts will be a reason for form a family, and that marital differences exist between all the spouses and that we must be careful in decisions, and leave Spaces of understanding to resolve possible crises.

In his interview with Sky News Arabia, El-Desouki lists the reasons for Egypt’s high divorce rate:

The balance of power that exists in the first year of marriage, and the desire to control and control the whole course of things, without accommodating the second part. Domestic violence, and the belief of a large number of Egyptian villagers that beating is the solution to tighten control over the woman, which leads to a gap between the two, and therefore to resort to the decision to end marital life and divorce. The absence of the concept of “loss of children” and the desire to end the marriage without thinking about their fate and their dispersion. The intervention of the parents often increases the state of tension, because of the will of each one to support his son, however wrongly. The difference in the personality and life of the two partners before and after marriage, due to the increased responsibility and burdens of life. The need to learn how to raise issues and deal with them so as not to exacerbate them, and sometimes to compromise, especially in situations that do no harm.
