University of Pennsylvania scientists: Sexual problems cause dementia

– Published on:

A study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania has shown a link between low levels of sexual satisfaction in middle age and premature cognitive decline. According to the results of the study, problems with sex and erection can be predictors of the development of dementia.

Scientists conducted a unique longitudinal study in which they measured memory function and sexual function at different stages. Observations revealed changes in these two aspects over time.

The head of the University of Pennsylvania Center for Healthy Aging and one of the authors of the study, Martin Slivinsky, informed us that the results of their study allow us to begin to understand the relationship between the level of satisfaction with life and human cognitive abilities.

Slivinsky noted that although a link has been found, the reason for it is still unknown. However, a decrease in life satisfaction can increase the risk of developing a number of health problems, such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, and other stress-related diseases.

We should not forget that improving the quality of sexual life can improve memory. In this regard, in addition to physical exercises and a healthy diet, harmony in sexual life becomes an important component of the overall quality of life.

The study was conducted among 818 men who were twins and veterans of the Vietnam War. For 12 years from age 56 to 68, participants were regularly tested, which included evaluation of processing speed, erectile function, and levels of sexual satisfaction.

The analysis of the data made it possible to establish a correlation between the quality of sexual life and the rate of development of dementia. During the study, scientists also took into account the demographic factors and health status of the participants. Medical Insider .

Slivinsky believes that sexual function can be an indicator not only for predicting dementia, but also for other diseases. Doctors of various specialties should pay more attention to the sexual life of patients, as this can be a clear indicator of their overall health.
