Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

RIA Novosti told when a person disappears from the radar and becomes a “ghost” or “zombie”

European scientists found that almost a third of teenagers or young people found themselves in a situation where their acquaintances suddenly disappeared and stopped communicating without any explanation. A similar phenomenon in science is called ghosting.

For the first time, such a term appeared in the dictionary in 2006 and meant a break in predominantly virtual relationships. With the development of the Internet, this phenomenon has become frequent, while the user himself, who has turned into a “ghost”, continues to be present on the network, maintain his page on social networks, but ignores messages.

“Technical devices and media platforms provide easy access to relationships, but also easy exit from them,” says University of Alabama researcher Leah Lefevre.

This phenomenon happens not only in love relationships, but also in friendly and even professional ones. In order to understand how a person who was left without a message feels, Dutch scientists interviewed almost 400 adults, of whom 37% experienced ghosting.

44% noted long-term psychological problems, and scientists found that people experience this way of parting much worse than explicit rejection in person.

“He creates an ambiguous situation: one side does not know what is happening. For those who are waiting for an explanation, the negative effect is intensified,” said researcher Kristina Lektor.

In addition, ghosting affects self-esteem, a sense of belonging and the meaningfulness of existence. It’s a paradox, but those people who are prone to certainty themselves strive to disappear from the lives of people to whom they are dear.

According to Austrian scientists, people aged 18 to 29 most often experience ghosting. In addition, the study showed that the more often a person uses social networks, the higher the risk of becoming a victim of a “ghost”, fear of expulsion or disturbing fasting.

If we talk about why ghosting happens at all, then all the same Austrian scientists, based on a survey in which 978 people took part, found out that the most common cause of disappearance is an overabundance of messages. The guests also noted that at some point the correspondence went beyond their capabilities, and then the easiest solution was to simply disappear.

Sometimes it also happens that the “ghost” after many years returned and again disturbed already overgrown wounds. According to the author of an article on the topic of ghosting Megan Wills, the most reasonable way would be to simply block such a “zombie” so as not to allow him to inflict mental anguish again, writes RIA News .
