Singer Shakira made the park famous when she took to the stage with hips that don’t lie. Presumably more of the singer’s body parts are genuine, but the same can’t be said for her ex-boyfriend, Gerard Pique.
Shakira and Gerard first met in 2010 when Shakira was filming a music video for the song Waka Waka which was the theme song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. A number of footballers appeared in the video, including Garard, who played for Spain.
“I wasn’t a football fan, so I didn’t know who he was,” the singer said in an interview, as it all played out. “When I saw the video, I thought – Hmm this one is kinda cute. And then someone decided to introduce us.”
Gerard himself said in an interview that he decided to write to her after meeting her for the first time. It is said that he fell so in love that he decided his team had to qualify for the World Cup finals so he could meet her again. Spain ended up winning the World Cup, they met again and officially emerged as a couple a year later. They then had two children together and the future looked bright.
Gerard retired his cleats in 2018 and Shakira celebrated the decision by paying tribute to him in an Instagram post where she said one of her fondest memories was watching him win the World Cup.
In 2020, Shakira opened up about the possibility of marriage, but she said she feared marriage and didn’t want Gerard to consider her a wife. “As a lover, a girlfriend. It’s a bit of the forbidden fruit, isn’t it? I want to keep him on his toes. I want him to think that anything is possible, based on his behavior.”
Caught red-handed
A year ago, the couple announced that they had broken up. In January this year, Shakira released a new song in which she appeared to shoot her ex. There she sang that she was too good for someone, that she should have dumped that person sooner because he let her down when she needed him the most. If she wished that person good luck with a new partner, he would have traded a fancy car for a slut. A few weeks later, it was revealed that Gerard was dating 23-year-old student Clara Chiu Marti. Shakira released another song in which she sang that it hurts to see her ex moving on.
Many thought it was likely that Shakira and Gerard’s relationship ended because he was unfaithful to her. The story began shortly before the couple announced their split, but tabloids reported that Gerard was caught red-handed in bed with his current girlfriend while he and Shakira were still living together. Now that theory has gained momentum after Shakira spoke to the Spanish edition of the People media outlet and described how she experienced Gerard’s behavior as a betrayal.
Betrayal at its most difficult moment
“He came to Barcelona to comfort me when I was overwhelmed with grief from the breakup,” Shakira said of her father, William Mebarak Chadid. At that time, Shakira was carrying her son, but his father fell and was seriously injured.
“It all happened at the same time. My family life was falling apart. I found out through the media that I had been betrayed while my father was in intensive care.”
But around this time, the media began to cover Gerard’s adultery. Her father, whom she loves more than anything, was at death’s door and she could no longer ask him for comfort as she used to. Fortunately, things went better than expected and her father is on the road to recovery. She says it’s nice to see her parents together, but they’ve been married for so long and the marriage is strong.
“They were the image of the dream that did not come true for me. But I hope they will be role models for my children.”
Shakira has yet to explicitly confirm that Gerard cheated, but most people think it’s pretty clear from her choice of words as well as the song lyrics. She said in a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon that she put up with Gerard too long and he behaved badly.
Gérard, who has not confirmed the affair either, says he is happy today and will not apologize for anything.
“I will continue to do what I want. On the day I die, I will look back and hope that I have always done what I wanted to do. I want to be true to myself,” he said in an interview. It may be easier for him to be true to himself than to be true to a partner. Or what?
