Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke at the World Leaders Climate Summit in Baku. Erdogan said that the chemical weapons used by Israel, which is committing genocide in Palestinian lands, have seeped into the soil and groundwater, darkening the future of the children of Gaza.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his wife Emine Erdogan attended the 29th Conference of the Parties COP29 World Leaders Climate Summit of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
The Erdogan couple met with the spouses of the Presidents of Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan at the opening of the Summit.
Speaking at the Summit, Erdogan said, “We are transforming our key sectors in line with our vision of reaching net zero emissions and green development by 2053. ”
We are transforming our key sectors in line with our vision of reaching net zero emissions and green development by 2053. Our efforts to implement the green finance strategy and create a national green taxonomy continue. We will soon submit our climate law, which includes an emissions trading system, to the Parliament, Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.
Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan further added, We will soon submit our climate law, which includes the Emissions Trading System, to our Parliament. We submitted our two-year transparency report and long-term climate strategy to the secretariat before COP29. We have implemented our climate change mitigation and adaptation strategy action plans covering the years 2024-2030. We have increased the share of total installed renewable energy to 59 percent. With this rate, we are ranked 5th in Europe and 11th in the world.
Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan further said, Our main priorities for our 2053 net zero emission targets are renewable energy, energy efficiency, and nuclear energy. We will increase our wind and solar energy installed capacity, which is 31 thousand megawatts today, to 120 thousand megawatts in 2035. In nuclear energy, we aim to reach a capacity of 20 thousand megawatts in 2050. We foresee a carbon dioxide equivalent emission reduction of 100 million tons with our National Energy Efficiency action plan covering the years 2024-2030. We continue to popularize our electric national car TOGG.
The zero waste project, which was initiated under the auspices of my wife Emine Erdoğan and has been taken to a global level, adds additional power to our fight against climate change. Thanks to this, we have prevented 5.9 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions since the beginning of the project. We have declared a water efficiency mobilization for the efficient use of our water resources. We are planting millions of saplings on the occasion of National Afforestation Day. Of course, the economic cost of all these efforts is very high. I believe that a climate financing target that will respond to the needs of developing countries, in particular, will be determined at this summit in order to make our global fight more powerful and effective, Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan included.
Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan further says, We accepted the future pact at the 79th UN General Assembly to build a just, sustainable, and nature-respecting world for future generations. While we are talking about leaving a just world for future generations here today, Israel’s unlawful, immoral, and unconscionable attacks targeting Palestine and Lebanon continue. Unfortunately, the current government continues to massacre people, regardless of children, women, and the elderly, and to cause a great environmental massacre. The chemicals leaking into the soil and groundwater due to Israeli attacks have already darkened the future of Gaza children.
According to Hurriyet Daily, “We believe that those responsible for severe humanitarian, environmental disaster in Gaza should be held accountable in international court,” President Erdoğan said at the COP 29 climate summit in Azerbaijan’s Baku on November 12.
Erdogan underlined that Israel continues to attack Palestine and Lebanon and massacre civilians, including children and women, in both countries. “Israel continues to create huge destruction. The chemicals leaked in soil and underground have already impacted the future of Gazan children,” Erdoğan said, urging international courts to ask the price of this crime.
