8A FENCE earns today’s best clue. Wilson Wilson Jr. – the all-knowing next-door neighbor on the ABC sitcom Home Improvement – appeared in nearly every episode of the show’s eight-season run (1991–1999) with his face perpetually blocked by whatever stood between him and Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor: a fence post, a shovel handle, a pile of leaves, a hedge. Actor Earl Hindman was credited as the show’s fourth lead, yet only his eyes and forehead were visible to the audience for almost a decade. The gag became so ingrained that the series finale addressed it directly, finally revealing Hindman’s full face to a live studio audience as the credits rolled.
3D IDING is the clue’s grammatical surprise. The word treats “ID” – short for identification, or the act of checking it – as a standard verb: to ID, IDed, IDing. It reads awkwardly in print because “ID” is so strongly associated with a noun that the verb form surprises solvers who parse the clue correctly but cannot picture the gerund. Bar bouncers and age-restricted retail clerks spend entire shifts doing precisely this, which is why the clue works as a definition even though IDING will never appear in most dictionaries under that spelling.
2D RULED is dated slang for “was excellent” or “was totally impressive,” most common in 1990s and early 2000s youth vernacular.
