The NYT Strands spangram for October 15, 2026, is LIGHTHOUSE, and the six theme answers are BEACON, STAIRCASE, DOME, LANTERN, TOWER and GALLERY. Puzzle #956 carries the theme clue “Sailor’s guide.” This guide covers the Thursday, October 15 puzzle, not the October 16 edition.

The theme points toward something that helps people navigate at sea. Rather than looking for types of boats or sailing equipment, think about a fixed structure on the coast. The answers describe that structure, its features and the signal it sends to passing vessels. For another example of how Strands theme clues connect a group of words, the August 22 puzzle used the spangram MOUNTAINRANGE.

For a gentle nudge before checking individual words, picture a tall building with a light at the top. A second hint: some answers describe how a person reaches the upper level, while others name what surrounds or protects the light. The shortest theme word has four letters, and the longest has nine.

The spangram, LIGHTHOUSE, ties those clues together, just as PROOF POSITIVE connected the August 10 puzzle’s theme. Mashable’s October 15 guide identifies the puzzle’s sea-related theme. The complete answer set comprises six theme words plus the spangram, rather than seven separate theme words.

BEACON is the guiding signal. STAIRCASE names the route up through the building. DOME is the rounded covering, while LANTERN refers here to the chamber enclosing the light rather than simply a portable lamp. TOWER describes the tall main structure that raises the light above its surroundings.

GALLERY is the answer most likely to send a solver in the wrong direction. It does not mean an art exhibition in this puzzle. In the lighthouse setting, it means the elevated walkway around the upper part of the structure. Reading the word in that architectural sense makes its connection to the theme clearer. Unlike NYT Connections, which sorts words into groups, Strands asks players to find related words within a letter grid.

If you are checking a nearly finished board, keep GALLERY distinct from GALLEY. The latter suggests a ship’s kitchen, which fits the broad nautical setting but is not one of this puzzle’s answers. Likewise, LANTERN and BEACON serve different roles in the solution: one names the enclosure for the light, the other its guiding function.

The completed solution for October 15 is therefore LIGHTHOUSE as the spangram, with BEACON, STAIRCASE, DOME, LANTERN, TOWER and GALLERY completing the theme. These answers belong specifically to puzzle #956. Readers revisiting earlier Strands puzzles can also find the July 17 solution, whose spangram was TRIVIALPURSUIT.
