Wordle #1877 Answer – August 9, 2026

The Wordle answer for August 9, 2026 is CLUNK.

CLUNK is the blunt thudding sound of something heavy hitting a hard surface – an onomatopoeia whose pronunciation recreates the noise it names. The hard CL- opening and the abrupt -UNK ending do exactly what the word describes. CLUNK is closely related to CLANK and CLONK, a family of English words that each describe hollow impact sounds with slightly different resonances: CLANK carries more metallic ring, CLONK sits lower and duller, and CLUNK lands somewhere between.

The word entered English in the 18th century, and while it is common in everyday speech, it does not appear as often in five-letter Wordle grids as its -UNK cousins. That relative rarity is part of what makes today’s puzzle a shade harder than it first looks.

Difficulty: medium-easy. The CL- cluster is not unusual, and once a solver places the U in the third position the -UNK tail usually resolves in the next row. No repeated letters means no false trails once the five positions are narrowed. Most players should finish in three or four guesses. Solvers who opened with a vowel-heavy starter (ADIEU, AUDIO, RAISE) will identify the U early and reach CLUNK by guess three; those who opened heavy on consonants may need a fourth.
