India vs South Africa Cricket Match Scorecard: T20 World Cup Final, WTC Tests and the 2024-26 Rivalry

India won the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa by seven runs, but the Proteas claimed a historic 2-0 Test series win in India in 2026 — the full format-by-format scorecard.

BARBADOS — The last ball of the 2024 T20 World Cup final told the whole story in a single delivery. South Africa needed 16 from the last over; Jasprit Bumrah was at the top of his mark; the Kensington Oval in Barbados had stopped breathing. Hardik Pandya conceded nine but no more. India won by seven runs. South Africa, within sight of their first global men’s cricket title, came up short again.

That final, played on June 29, 2024, was the peak of India’s dominance over South Africa in white-ball cricket. It was also the moment that defined what followed: South Africa took the hurt of Barbados into the red-ball format and produced the most consequential result between the two sides since the turn of the century.

In 2026, South Africa won a two-match Test series in India 2-0. It was the first time South Africa had won a Test series on Indian soil in 25 years. The series was decided by Simon Harmer, the off-spinner who took 17 wickets across both matches and was named Player of the Series. India, missing Jasprit Bumrah and touring with a transitional squad, could not negotiate Harmer on surfaces that turned from the first session. The result sat heavy: India’s World Test Championship percentage fell to 48.15 per cent, placing them fifth in the table.

The South Africa that won that series was not the same unit that had lost in Barbados. Their batting remained vulnerable in short-form cricket — Heinrich Klaasen’s cameo in the 2024 final notwithstanding — but their Test bowling attack, led by Harmer and backed by Kagiso Rabada’s pace, was operating at a level that India’s injury-depleted side could not handle. South Africa sat second in the WTC table on the back of it.

The full format picture across 2024-26: India lead the T20I head-to-head in this cycle, having beaten South Africa in every ICC event encounter of significance. The T20 World Cup semi-final in 2024 ended with India winning before the final. The final itself was the closest game of the tournament. India’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign did not cross paths with South Africa in the knockout stages. The ODI format has produced no bilateral series between the sides in this period.

The 2024 T20 World Cup final remains the clearest illustration of the difference between the two sides at their respective ceilings. India had Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh as a pace pair no other T20 squad could match in those conditions. Rohit Sharma, still in his last tournament as T20I captain, made the key tactical call to bowl first after winning the toss, reading the pitch better than the Proteas had anticipated. When the chase began, South Africa’s batting order — which had been clinical in the group stage — found a different India. Every decision went against them by a margin of yards, not miles.

What the India vs South Africa cricket match scorecard across 2024-26 shows most clearly is a rivalry split sharply by format. South Africa have demonstrated they can beat India at Test cricket on Indian soil, which almost no team manages, while India have demonstrated they can beat South Africa in any white-ball knockout when Bumrah is available and fit. The implication for the 2025-27 WTC cycle is significant: if the two sides meet in a WTC final, that context will matter enormously.

India’s response to the 2-0 Test series loss has been visible in squad selection. The current tour of Sri Lanka, while missing several senior players, is explicitly structured as a development window. Washington Sundar, who had been expected to form part of the spin-bowling answer to Harmer’s impact, missed the tour with injury. Sai Sudharsan’s absence added another layer of instability to a batting order that, in India, had been unravelled by South Africa’s off-spinner in the second innings of both matches.

South Africa’s position in mid-2026 is the most interesting it has been in a decade. Second in the WTC table, with their best spin bowler operating at peak effectiveness and their pace battery relatively intact, they enter the second half of the WTC cycle with credible final ambitions. The white-ball gap with India persists. The Test gap, at least for now, has been closed — and in one format, reversed.

According to the ICC, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma described the 2026 Test series win in India as a defining moment for Proteas cricket. The next bilateral Test series between India and South Africa has not been confirmed in the current international schedule cycle, meaning South Africa’s win stands uncontested in the WTC ledger for the remainder of the cycle.

India’s BCCI review following the England T20I series identified conditions-savviness as a structural issue across formats. The South Africa Test result, coming against a weakened touring squad, sits within that frame. What the scoreboard shows is 2-0. What it obscures is the distance India’s full-strength side, with Bumrah and their first-choice top six, would present as an opponent. That team was not available for this series.

The seven-run margin in Barbados will last longer in South African memory than the 2-0 in the scorebook. The Test win is the more durable result. For cricket’s rivalry between these two sides, 2026 is the year the ledger shifted — temporarily or permanently — in the format that generates the fewest headlines but carries the most weight.
