The NBA released its 2026-27 regular season schedule this week, and if there was any doubt about how aggressively the league intended to build its calendar around its most consequential offseason signing, the first date on the slate made it plain. LeBron James, in his 24th NBA season, begins it against the defending champions, at their arena, on the night the league turns the lights back on.
The Knicks claimed the 2026 NBA title in June, ending one of the longest championship droughts in professional basketball and igniting a celebration in New York that the city had not witnessed in more than five decades. Now they open the defense of that title against a 76ers franchise that made the defining move of the summer: convincing LeBron, at 42, that his best remaining chance at another ring ran through Philadelphia rather than Los Angeles, where he spent four seasons with the Lakers.
Whether that calculation proves correct will take eight months to find out. What the schedule release establishes is where the argument gets made first. October 20 at Madison Square Garden is that place.
Two other scheduled matchups from the released calendar carry similar weight. The Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors are scheduled in another marquee matchup that the league flagged among its notable early-season games, and the Oklahoma City Thunder, coming off a strong playoff run, figure prominently in what the league described as ten key dates to mark for the season. The preseason picture adds another layer: the NBA China Games in Macao send Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks to Asia in October for the league’s most-watched international showcase before a single regular-season tip-off. The San Antonio Spurs, building toward a second title defense, are also slotted in key stretches designed to test whether they can sustain the level that brought them the 2026 championship.
What the schedule cannot answer is whether the Philadelphia roster assembled around LeBron is deep enough to sustain a full 82-game season at the level required to challenge seriously for a title. Building a team around a 42-year-old, regardless of how historic his career has been, requires specific design choices: minutes management, strategic rest, co-stars who do not require the ball in order to function, and a defensive scheme that compensates for the inevitable limitations of age. The 76ers front office believes it has constructed those pieces. Training camp, which opens in late September, is when that belief gets its first serious examination.

What no broadcast schedule can project in August is which version of each team shows up to the Garden on October 20. The television matchup is set. The games, in the sense that will actually determine whether LeBron’s decision to join Philadelphia changes the balance of the Eastern Conference, have not started yet.
