LOS ANGELES — In October 2022, Meghan Markle told an audience she was finished with acting. Not taking a break. Not leaving a door ajar. “I’m done,” she said, and added, for the record, that her “intention is to absolutely not” return. The intention has apparently shifted. Reports emerged Friday that Markle is in early-stage talks to join Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” Season 3, her first significant scripted role since leaving “Suits” in 2017, and the most direct test yet of whether the identity she spent six years building elsewhere can coexist with the one she spent nine years building on screen.
The project sits inside Guy Ritchie’s stylish crime ensemble, which stars Theo James, Kaya Scodelario, and Giancarlo Esposito and shoots in the United Kingdom. Season 2 premieres September 3 on Netflix; Season 3 was greenlit before that premiere aired. No deal is confirmed. No character has been described. Markle’s representatives have not offered comment. The talks are early enough that they may not progress, and the uncertainty here is not a caveat buried at the bottom of the story. It is the central fact.
What gives the report weight is the distance between 2022 and 2026. The “I’m done” statement was not a casual remark. It came during a deliberate repositioning, the same year Spotify’s “Archetypes” podcast was running, the year she and Prince Harry were articulating what their team described as a multifaceted production enterprise. Scripted acting was categorized as part of a previous life, the profession she left when she became a royal, and left again when she and Harry stepped back from senior duties. The categorization appeared deliberate.
The years between that statement and these talks have not produced a settled alternative. Spotify ended the podcast after one season in 2023. Netflix’s “Pearl,” an animated series in development, was scrapped. A Balenciaga debut at Paris Fashion Week in 2025 added a luxury fashion dimension that her team clearly hoped might anchor something. Her lifestyle brand launched as American Riviera Orchard, rebranded as As Ever, and has accumulated a genuine if modest commercial footprint. “With Love, Meghan,” the Netflix cooking and lifestyle series that premiered in 2026, shifted from a full-season format to seasonal specials after its initial run. Each venture connected with an audience; none produced a career identity as durable as a successful scripted role.
Doug Eldridge, the founder of Achilles PR, described the overall pattern as “a carousel of career horses,” a phrase that captures velocity without destination. The more sympathetic reading is that Markle spent six years testing what she could be outside the structures that had defined her: first the royal household, then the entertainment industry, then the platform economy. Testing at that scale, under that level of scrutiny, rarely produces a settled answer inside six years.
According to Fox News, which first reported the talks, industry observers described a return to acting as “a wise move” at this stage of her career. Dan Wakeford, the founder of Celebrity Intelligence, suggested the key to a successful re-entry would be “an extraordinary script,” something capable of “shocking people” into a reassessment of what Markle can do on screen. Whether “The Gentlemen” Season 3 constitutes that script depends on writing no one outside the production has yet read.
The UK filming location carries a dimension beyond scheduling. Markle and Harry’s relationship with Britain has been complicated by an ongoing dispute that has kept their children from visiting King Charles for several consecutive years. A working return to British screens, not a charity appearance, not a brief family gathering, but weeks or months on a production schedule, would represent a different kind of engagement with the country she and Harry left in 2020. Whether that dimension has been factored into the discussions, or how her team would frame it publicly if a deal materializes, is not known.
Her most recent screen appearance offered some data on the separate question of ability. A guest judge slot on MasterChef Australia in July, during which Harry made a live video call to the studio, drew the show’s largest overnight audience in three years. The warmth that made “Suits” work for nine seasons registered clearly in an unscripted format. Whether that quality translates to the harder-edged register Ritchie works in is an open creative question, separate from the biographical layers the casting would carry.
The talks, if they lead anywhere, represent the entertainment industry declining to draw a permanent line under the pre-royal version of her career. What they do not yet represent is a resolution. Markle left “Suits” in 2017 to become a duchess. She left the duchess role to become something else. Whether “The Gentlemen” Season 3 becomes the next chapter or another early-stage conversation that never closes is what the industry, and a substantial portion of the public, now has to wait out.
