ORCHARD PARK — Buffalo’s $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium opener should have been defined by Josh Allen overcoming flu symptoms to throw five touchdown passes in a 41–31 victory over the Detroit Lions.
By week’s end, however, it may be remembered for a second-quarter play in which DJ Moore reached for a pass in Detroit’s end zone, landed on his shoulder, and walked to the sideline holding his right arm.
Moore was diagnosed with an AC-joint sprain. He is considered day-to-day, but his availability for Buffalo’s Week 3 home game against the Los Angeles Chargers remains uncertain.
Coach Joe Brady used notably measured language after Thursday’s win. “If DJ Moore can be out there for Week 3, he’ll be out there,” Brady said.
The conditional phrasing suggested more uncertainty than the team would normally volunteer at this stage—and it was not accidental.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the AC joint diagnosis Friday morning and noted that doctors do not consider the injury serious. The AC joint is the connection at the top of the shoulder between the acromion and clavicle. Sprains range from Type 1, a ligament stretch that can resolve in days, to Type 3, a full separation that sometimes requires surgical consultation. The Bills have not disclosed the grade. What they have said, as CBS Sports reported, is that Moore has a chance to play next week but it is not guaranteed.
One scheduling factor works in Buffalo’s favor: the Bills played Thursday night, giving them an extended ten-day gap before the Chargers game. For an AC joint sprain of the milder variety, ten days of rest and treatment is a different timeline than the four-day window between a Sunday game and the next Thursday contest. That additional recovery time may determine whether this is a story about a missed week or a minor disruption absorbed before the season’s first meaningful stretch run.
Moore was acquired from the Chicago Bears in the offseason, giving Josh Allen the WR1 he had been waiting for through six seasons. The connection built at training camp was visible from the first day of padded practice, an element of spontaneous trust that coaches usually caution against reading too much into until September. On Thursday night, Moore caught four passes for 47 yards on six targets before his night ended early.
Dalton Kincaid caught seven passes on eight targets for 95 yards and a touchdown. Through two weeks of the 2026 season, Kincaid has accumulated 225 receiving yards. As Bleacher Report noted, that is the highest two-week total for a tight end through the opening fortnight of an NFL season since Jared Cook opened 2019 with the New Orleans Saints. The comparison is early-September arithmetic, which means exactly as much as early-September arithmetic always does, but the underlying numbers reflect something real. Allen found Kincaid twice in the third quarter on intermediate routes that required decision-making after the break, and the tight end handled both without hesitation.
The Lions had prepared for a Bills offense led by Moore. Detroit deployed press coverage on Buffalo’s outside receivers throughout the first half, taking away the horizontal distribution Allen uses to relieve pressure from a single defensive scheme. The windows it opened in the middle of the field were Kincaid’s to exploit, and he did.
Keon Coleman contributed six catches for 65 yards, running cleaner routes than he showed in camp and winning two contested balls without forcing the issue when coverage dictated a short gain. For a second-year receiver who has carried questions about his consistency in traffic, Thursday was a step toward answering them.
The relevant question for Week 3 is how the Los Angeles Chargers incorporate Moore’s status into their preparation. Justin Herbert posted 312 passing yards in the Chargers’ Week 2 win without a turnover. Los Angeles arrives in Orchard Park at 2-0, with a layered offensive scheme built around coordinator Greg Roman’s motion-heavy approach that generates distinct problems from what Detroit brought on Thursday. Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. figures into the coverage matchup planning in ways that shift considerably depending on whether Moore is on the field.
If Moore cannot go, Khalil Shakir would likely handle the slot role Moore has occupied in Brady’s system. Joshua Palmer and Coleman would manage the outside work. Kincaid would continue functioning as the offense’s primary intermediate option, which is, at this point, a role he has not just filled but defined. The arrangement is workable. It is not the offense Buffalo constructed.
Allen finished Thursday’s flu-game performance with 248 passing yards and 69 on the ground, distributing touchdowns across three different positions. The NFL’s official injury report will carry Moore’s designation through the week, updating as his shoulder responds to treatment. What it will not carry is the context: that Allen did not require Moore to do what he did Thursday, which is both the most encouraging thing about the 2026 Bills and, for Moore, not entirely reassuring.
The offseason logic that brought Moore to Orchard Park was premised on giving Allen a weapon that could not be schemed away. An AC joint sprain sustained on a dive for a ball in the end zone of a game already won is not the test that logic anticipated. Whether it becomes a significant setback depends entirely on how the next seven days go. The Bills, and the Chargers, will both be watching.
