Madonna celebrated daughter Lourdes Leon’s 30th birthday on Wednesday with a collection of family photographs and videos, pairing a look back at her eldest child’s life with a message about their bond and the circumstances of her birth.

The singer, 68, shared the Instagram tribute on October 14, the anniversary of Lourdes’ birth in Los Angeles in 1996. The post moved from childhood memories to adulthood, including footage of Lourdes singing, according to People’s account of the birthday message.

‘Happy Birthday My Lolita!’ Madonna wrote. ‘You came to me in a Dream. A fever dream. A Dream called Life.’ She told her daughter that putting their story into words would make her ‘cry a river of tears’.

The photographs gave the tribute a family-album quality. They included an image of Madonna breastfeeding Lourdes as a newborn, InStyle reported, alongside photographs and videos spanning the years since. The post was a retrospective, rather than an announcement of a birthday party or new professional project.

Madonna also recalled Lourdes’ delivery, writing that she underwent an emergency Caesarean section after 18 hours of labour and a slowing fetal heartbeat. Those details were the singer’s personal recollection in the birthday caption, not a medical account independently established by this report.

She described helicopters and television news crews above the hospital, placing the family memory against the public attention surrounding her first child’s arrival. ‘Your birth was dramatic. Like our lives,’ she wrote.

Lourdes is Madonna’s daughter with Carlos Leon, the actor and former personal trainer. Carlos shared a separate birthday video montage on social media, assembling photographs from across his daughter’s life. His 11-year-old son helped put the slideshow together, according to HOLA’s report on his tribute.

Madonna’s message repeatedly returned to the similarities she sees between herself and Lourdes. Calling their connection ‘Biblical’, she wrote that when she asks God to explain it, the answer is to look in the mirror. ‘If what we risk reveals what we value then I would risk it all on you,’ she added.

The singer closed by calling Lourdes her ‘Little Star’, a reference with a history in her music. Madonna wrote the song of that name for her daughter and included it on her 1998 album Ray of Light, People reported.

‘Never forget who you are,’ she wrote in the birthday post, before telling Lourdes to keep dreaming and remember that she came ‘From Love’. The language linked the adult milestone with the song Madonna had written when her daughter was young.

Lourdes has since built her own career in modelling and music. Performing as Lolahol, she released her debut single, ‘Lock&Key’, in August 2022. Her modelling work has included campaigns for Savage x Fenty, Burberry, Marc Jacobs, Swarovski and Mugler, according to People.

The mother and daughter have also brought their relationship into the recording studio. People reported that their song ‘The Test’ appeared on Madonna’s Confessions II, released in July. In a June Interview magazine cover story cited by People, Madonna said Lourdes had proposed writing together as a way to heal their relationship.

That collaboration supplies context for the birthday tribute, but the new post did not set out a further account of their private disagreements. Its focus was on memories, affection and the experience of watching Lourdes reach 30.

Lourdes is the eldest of Madonna’s six children. The singer is also mother to Rocco Ritchie, David Banda, Mercy James and twins Stella and Estere. Wednesday’s tribute returned to the beginning of that family story, while recognising the independent adult her first child has become.
