WESTON, Florida – Venezuelan singer and composer Gus Ormo was found dead in a backyard swimming pool at his Weston home on Friday, October 16, as Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives investigated what authorities described as a suspicious incident.
CBS News Miami reported that Ormo was found face down in the water, surrounded by a long cord. NBC6 separately reported that the man found submerged in the pool was pronounced dead and that detectives were investigating the circumstances.
Ormo’s sister, Antonieta Ormo, confirmed his death to CBS News Miami but said the family had no further information about what had happened, according to the New York Post’s report. The family’s confirmation identified the musician without resolving the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Post described Ormo as having been found “tied up.” It also reported that aerial footage from WPLG Local 10 showed a long blue cord across the patio and leading into the pool. Those reported details do not establish how the cord was used or what caused his death.
Homicide and crime-scene detectives were investigating, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Gerdy St. Louis told reporters, according to the Post. The involvement of those investigative units should not be confused with a completed finding that Ormo was killed. Authorities’ reported description remained a suspicious incident.
The composer’s body was taken to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death, the Post reported, citing CBS. Its October 17 account did not provide a final medical finding. The discovery of a person in a pool does not, by itself, establish drowning as the cause.
Ormo was known for romantic songwriting and his skill at the piano, CBS News Miami reported. His death brought attention to both his music and the unanswered questions at the Weston home.
The available reports establish that Ormo died and that detectives are examining the circumstances. They do not settle the cause of death or establish a motive. Those questions remain for the medical examiner and investigators.
