NEW YORK – John Wilson is reportedly filming a documentary about Harry Styles and his Together, Together tour, bringing the filmmaker behind HBO’s How To with John Wilson into the orbit of a major pop residency.

Wilson has been filming Styles at Madison Square Garden since August, Variety reported, citing two sources familiar with the production. The outlet identified Universal Pictures Content Group as involved in the project. Distribution plans remain under discussion, so a theatrical release should not yet be treated as settled.

IndieWire also reported on the documentary, placing it after Wilson’s feature debut, The History of Concrete. The new assignment would move him from an investigation of an everyday material to a performer whose shows already attract intense attention.

Wilson’s appeal has rested on the distance between an ordinary starting point and the people and situations his camera encounters along the way. In its Sundance review of The History of Concrete, The Hollywood Reporter described a feature that retained the aesthetics and sensibility of his television work. That background makes his involvement a different proposition from simply hiring a director to record a concert.

The History of Concrete followed Wilson as he searched for a new creative direction after his television series. A workshop on writing Hallmark movies became part of the route into a documentary about concrete, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s account of its acquisition. Magnolia Pictures acquired that film’s North American rights in March. That agreement concerns The History of Concrete, not the reported Styles project.

Wilson’s debut has also remained in the documentary awards conversation. The Hollywood Reporter’s October 13 Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominations report listed The History of Concrete among films with four nominations. The Styles reporting therefore arrives as Wilson’s first feature continues to draw industry attention.

For Styles, the filming comes during a touring cycle that is already extending beyond the residency. He announced a 2027 stadium expansion of Together, Together in September, with shows in North America and Europe, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Those concert plans are separate from any eventual documentary release schedule.

The immediate news is the reported collaboration and the filming already taking place in New York. Whether the finished documentary will follow the conventions of a concert film or take a more recognizably Wilson-like detour remains to be seen.
