LOS ANGELES – Julia Stiles ended her tribute to Heath Ledger surrounded by five actors who shared their breakthrough film, turning a Dancing with the Stars routine into a reunion of the 10 Things I Hate About You cast. The October 20 performance closed with a rose, a photograph and the sound of the movie’s poem.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gabrielle Union, Larisa Oleynik, Andrew Keegan and Susan May Pratt joined Stiles on the ballroom floor after her contemporary routine with professional partner Ezra Sosa. The Hollywood Reporter described the reunion, which brought together six performers from the 1999 romantic comedy to remember its late leading man.

Stiles and Sosa danced to Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” the song Ledger’s character, Patrick Verona, sings to Stiles’ Kat Stratford in the film. The choice did more than provide a familiar soundtrack. It recalled a scene in which Ledger made an extravagant public gesture central to the movie’s romance.

The routine then moved from that exuberant memory to a quieter one. Audio of Kat’s poem played as Stiles looked toward a photograph of herself and Ledger and placed a single rose on the steps. The contrast joined two recognizable parts of the film without reproducing its dialogue as a new account of the actors’ lives.

The tribute had been announced before the episode. ABC News previewed Stiles’ dedication to Ledger and the song associated with their film. The cast’s appearance added a separate moment to the planned dance: the people who had helped create that screen world were present to share the remembrance.

Their roles make the gathering more specific than a collection of celebrity guests. Gordon-Levitt played Cameron James, Oleynik played Kat’s younger sister Bianca, and Keegan played Joey Donner. Union appeared as Chastity and Pratt as Mandella. They returned as colleagues, not as a recreation of those fictional characters or a sequel to their story.

The six actors held hands while looking toward the image of Stiles and Ledger, according to the report carried by Yahoo. That collective ending changed the scale of the tribute. What began with Stiles and her dance partner concluded with members of the film’s ensemble sharing the same focal point.

Stiles, now 45, described the performance as bringing back memories of being 17 and of the person she has become since. She said Ledger “just brought out the light in everybody.” Her recollection emphasized his playfulness and the way he made other people shine, placing the tribute in the experience of working together.

Her appearance on the Dancing with the Stars season 35 cast gave that memory an unusual setting. A televised competition supplied the stage, but the reunion reached beyond the partnership being judged. Sosa performed with her in the present; the actors who joined afterward connected the moment to the film they had made with Ledger.

Before the broadcast, Sosa set out a boundary for the choreography. “This isn’t about defining a relationship or telling a story that isn’t ours to tell,” he wrote in a joint message with Stiles, quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. He described the aim as honoring the film, a moment in time and Ledger’s continuing impact.

Sosa also said the piece had been developed with care and guidance from people close to Ledger’s memory. The quoted message did not identify those advisers. His explanation supports describing a considered memorial performance; it does not establish a new account of a private romance or authorize conclusions about relationships beyond what the participants said.

That distinction is particularly relevant to this film. Kat and Patrick’s relationship supplies its romantic plot, while the returning actors have their own memories of making it. The song and poem can recall the fictional love story without requiring a news account to treat the characters’ feelings as biographical evidence about the performers.

The movie itself translated an older story into a different setting. ABC News’ earlier account of the film described the 1999 comedy as loosely based on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The ballroom tribute made another change of medium, carrying recognizable music and spoken words from cinema into a live dance.

Stiles and Sosa received four nines, for a total of 36 out of 40. Those results belong to the wider Dedication Night results recap, which covers the full field and the decision not to eliminate a couple. The cast reunion is a separate part of the episode, not evidence that the pair won the night’s leaderboard.

The numerical result also cannot describe everything the closing scene contained. A judges’ total records an assessment of the routine. It does not measure the significance of five former colleagues stepping forward together, or replace the explanation Stiles and Sosa gave for choosing this particular material and treating it with care.

For a performer introduced to viewers in coverage of the season’s screen-to-ballroom cast, the tribute drew on a role that remains closely associated with her career. This time, that earlier screen identity was not simply a reference in a rehearsal package. Fellow cast members joined her in person after the dance.

Ledger died in 2008 at 28. Tuesday’s performance returned to the work he and Stiles shared without pretending to resolve the loss. It ended instead with a small physical gesture and a group of colleagues standing together, allowing the film’s familiar images to become a public act of remembrance.
