The UK will hand over armour-piercing shells containing depleted uranium to Ukraine, said Annabelle Goldie, the country’s deputy defense minister. Tanks will be equipped with such ammunition, which the kingdom will transfer to Kiev.
“In addition to supplying Challenger-2 main battle tanks to Ukraine, we will supply ammunition, including armour-piercing shells containing depleted uranium. Such projectiles are very effective against modern tanks and armored vehicles,” the minister said on the official website of the British Parliament.
Uranium is very dense and hard. Due to these qualities, it is used both in the production of military armor and ammunition, mainly cores for armor-piercing projectiles. Depleted uranium is not highly radioactive, although it is considered toxic and carcinogenic.
Previously, the White House had refused to confirm the supply of US shells containing depleted uranium to Ukraine.
The Kremlin said it would consider their use in Ukraine a “dirty bomb”.
