Former Peruvian President Toledo has been extradited from the United States to his native country, where he faces 20 years in prison.
Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo has been extradited from the United States to his native country. On board a commercial flight, the former head of state arrived in Peru to serve an 18-month pre-trial detention, RPP radio reported.
The Supreme Court’s press office said Toledo will be taken to the courthouse, where standard identification procedures will be carried out.
Toledo served as Peru’s president from 2001 to 2006. According to the investigating authorities, his activities in office could have contributed to the passage of a law modifying the rules for public tenders. After the law was passed, the famous Brazilian construction company Odebrecht was then able to win a series of large contracts totaling half a billion dollars. The total amount of bribes allegedly received by Alejandro Toledo is estimated at $20 million.
If his guilt is proven by Peruvian justice, the former national leader faces more than 20 years in prison for this crime.
