Russian scientists have developed a new steel that is resistant to extreme impacts and wear. The achievement of the authors was due to the correct selection of alloying additives.
The development of additive manufacturing technology makes it possible to simplify and reduce costs by eliminating the machining of steel billets while maintaining high strength. The selected set can be varied to obtain different end products.
The Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation claims that this level was achieved thanks to special chemical additives. The authors of the work took Hadfield steel as a basis – an alloy steel with a high content of carbon and manganese.
It is also used in industries such as mining and manufacturing, where it is used to make parts for equipment such as tank tracks.
In order to create steel with such qualities as low thermal conductivity, high toughness and wear resistance, according to scientists, repeated heat treatment or hardening by explosive or electrophysical methods is required.
Such operations take a lot of time, resources and are dangerous for workers.
The machining step in steel production can be significantly reduced with the right alloy composition, which makes high-strength steel cheaper and easier to manufacture.
The chemical analysis of the steel combined with the methods of mathematical statistics and forecasting to determine the most promising proportions of alloying additives made it possible to obtain a high-quality product.
The authors selected industrial conditions by melting various combinations of alloys under these conditions, reports RT .
After studying the physical properties of various samples, the scientists determined which combination of additives would produce steel with a long service life and maximum endurance.
