The New York Jets may have found their most fascinating quarterback project in years with Cade Klubnik, and early signs from rookie minicamp suggest the franchise is already intrigued by the former Clemson star’s confidence and command.
Klubnik entered the 2026 NFL Draft projected by many analysts as a potential first round pick before a difficult stretch during his final season at Clemson dramatically damaged his stock. The Jets eventually traded up to select him in the fourth round at No. 110 overall, a move that surprised many draft observers.
Yet the rookie has wasted little time making an impression in Florham Park.
Multiple reports from Jets camp described Klubnik carrying himself with “authority” during drills and meetings, displaying leadership traits that stood out despite his Day 3 draft status. Observers noted his command of the offense and comfort operating in the early stages of NFL practices.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn also made it clear the organization believes Klubnik has significant developmental upside. Glenn praised the quarterback’s intelligence and confirmed the team plans to give him extensive preseason opportunities.
“We’re going to push the envelope with that player,” Glenn said while discussing the rookie quarterback competition.
Klubnik’s road to the NFL became turbulent during his final season at Clemson. Injuries, declining production, and a disappointing team campaign caused scouts to question whether he still possessed franchise quarterback potential. His touchdown production dropped sharply after a breakout 2024 season, leading to one of the biggest draft slides among quarterbacks in the 2026 class.
Still, the quarterback insists adversity strengthened him mentally.
“In my mind, I’m a winner”, Klubnik said while reflecting on the criticism and setbacks he faced during his final college season.
That mentality appears to align with the Jets’ new organizational direction under Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey. The franchise is attempting to recover from a disastrous 3-14 campaign in 2025 and has emphasized toughness, accountability, and leadership throughout the offseason.

The Jets do not appear ready to rush Klubnik into a starting role, especially with veteran quarterback depth still under discussion. However, the rookie is expected to receive meaningful preseason reps as the organization evaluates whether his confidence and athletic traits can translate into long term NFL success.
Some league insiders believe the franchise’s recent instability, including Aaron Rodgers’ turbulent run with the New York Jets, has only increased pressure on the team to develop a sustainable long-term quarterback plan.
That discussion has also fueled speculation surrounding Russell Wilson and the Jets as the organization continues evaluating multiple veteran and rookie options entering the 2026 season.
Off the field, Klubnik has already drawn praise for his work ethic. Reports revealed that he and several offensive rookies organized extra study sessions at the team hotel before minicamp practices, reviewing the playbook late into the night in makeshift meeting spaces.
The Jets officially signed Klubnik to his rookie contract earlier this week, ensuring the quarterback could immediately begin working with offensive coordinator Frank Reich and quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave.
For a quarterback many teams passed on multiple times during draft weekend, Klubnik already sounds determined to prove the league made a mistake.
And if the early atmosphere around Jets rookie camp is any indication, New York believes there may still be far more to unlock in the former Clemson quarterback than his fourth-round draft status suggests.
