The Secretary-General of OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) Mohammed Barkindo died at the age of 63 in Nigeria.

This information was disclosed on Wednesday by the CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari on his Twitter account.

Barkindo, originally from Nigeria, died last night. Information about his funeral will be given later, added Kyari.
The cause of death of the OPEC chief has not been specified.
Appreciated his work
Shortly before his death, the head of OPEC spoke at an international energy conference in Nigeria, and then met with Nigerian President Muhammad Buhari, who highly appreciated his work as OPEC’s secretary-general for the past six years.

Barkindo has held the position of OPEC Secretary-General since 2016, and his second term was set to expire this month. According to the OPEC charter, the head of the oil cartel is elected for a period of three years and can be re-elected only once.
