February 13, 2023

The Russian Embassy told RG that the diplomatic mission has been in contact with Russian citizens since the very beginning of the tightening of passport and migration control by local authorities. The head of the consular service, Georgy Polin, said he was personally with this group of “non-entry” people during their stay in the departure area, and also visited them on February 9 and 10. “I gave one of the citizens the medicines she needed, which she carried in her luggage (to which she had no access), then handed over a small “humanitarian aid” collected by kindly compatriots previously arrived in Argentina – mainly personal hygiene products”, – noted the diplomat.

Polin clarified that in the case of the Russians, it was not about their detention – they were asked to leave the country on the next flight, but they refused and turned to local lawyers for help. aid. According to the diplomat, the conditions of their stay in the departure zone of the international airport can hardly be called acceptable for women in the long course of pregnancy. “There are no beds, showers and other amenities. Their families and lawyers have not been allowed to access them,” he said.

As Argentina’s migration service commented to RG, “sooner or later it had to happen,” as nearly 6,000 pregnant Russian women entered the country as tourists during the year, which is an absolute record and could only attract attention. According to the interlocutor, around the summer of last year, the department began to actively study data on Russian women who gave birth to their children on Argentine soil and subsequently applied for a residence permit and, through therefore, a passport. Around the same time, changes were made to the generally accepted interrogation procedure at border control.

The girls began to take an interest in the details of their stay in Argentina, asking for exact addresses of residence, and sometimes travel routes across the country. Recently, the migration service and the police have started raiding the addresses given to ensure that they really live there. Before that, this practice was not really applied to tourists from Russia.
