The Pentagon plans to transfer to Ukraine several thousand small arms, more than a million cartridges and other weapons of Iranian origin destined for the Yemeni Houthis supported by Iran.
This was reported by the Wall Street Journal, citing its sources on US and European officials.
According to the publication, we are talking about more than 5,000 machine guns, one and a half million cartridges, a small number of anti-tank missiles and more than 7,000 radio fuses used in anti-aircraft missiles.
These weapons have been seized in recent months from smugglers while patrolling Yemen’s coastal waters by American and French ships, writes the Wall Street Journal.
According to the newspaper’s interlocutors, the problem is that, according to the terms of the UN arms embargo in Yemen, the confiscated weapons must be destroyed, they must not be used in other military conflicts.
According to the publication, attorneys suggest the White House is using laws to confiscate assets belonging to individuals or organizations engaged in illegal activity. But that will require a presidential executive order or a special congressional decision.
