According to the agency, between 2,500 and 3,000 farmers, mostly owners of pig farms, came to demonstrate in the center of the capital of Belgium, who oppose the so-called Plan Azot, drawn up by the government of the northern region of the country – Flanders The column of tractors of disgruntled herders stretched for 15 to 20 kilometers.
It should be noted that this plan aims to protect the environment by reducing nitrogen emissions, one of the main producers of which is pig farming. At the same time, authorities in the region intend to liquidate a number of large pig farms. Furthermore, it is supposed to prescribe strict environmental restrictions for all farms. The agricultural unions are asking the authorities for a radical revision of their draft plan. Otherwise, as protesters note, the planned restrictions threaten to become a “socio-economic killer” for pastoralists.
