Beijing does not want to coordinate the visit of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, because it fears that the American side will publish the results of the investigation into the downed balloon, writes the Financial Times.
As reported, after the incident with a downed Chinese balloon over the United States, Blinken canceled an already agreed visit to China, and now Beijing is not ready to accept it. At the same time, it is unclear what the US side intends to do with the incident report.
As noted, Beijing fears the US will release a report during Blinken’s visit. Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang had already briefed the US side on this issue.
The publication points out that some US officials want declassified evidence made public to show that the balloon was in fact carrying out surveillance, and Congress should also push for the FBI’s findings to be released.
Another reason for China’s reluctance to coordinate Blinken’s visit is the Americans’ recent contacts with Taiwanese authorities, the document said.
Earlier this week, Blinken said he remained committed to traveling to Beijing when “the conditions are right” to do so.
