Dhoni is the best captain in the history of IPL, there has never been a captain like him, nor will there be in future: Gavaskar

Describing Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the best captain in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), veteran batsman Sunil Gavaskar said that a captain like him has never happened and will never happen in future.

Dhoni made a record of playing 200 matches as captain for Chennai Super Kings on 12 April in a match against Rajasthan Royals in Chennai. The 41-year-old former Indian captain is the first player in the history of IPL to achieve this feat. His team lost the match by three runs.

‘Chennai Super Kings know how to get out of tough situations’

Former Indian captain Gavaskar said, “Chennai Super Kings knows how to get out of difficult situations. This has been possible only because of the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Captaining 200 matches is very difficult. Captaining in so many matches is a burden and it can also affect his performance.

But Mahi is of a different kind, Gavaskar said, according to a release from the IPL broadcasters. He is a different kind of captain. There has never been a captain like him, nor will there be in future.

Dhoni has been a part of the Chennai Super Kings since the inception of the IPL. Meanwhile, this IPL team was suspended for two years (2016-17) after its officials were found to be involved in illegal acts and then in 2016 he led Pune Supergiants in 14 matches.

In this way, he has captained 214 matches in IPL so far. Under the leadership of Dhoni, Chennai Super Kings have won the IPL title four times. His record so far as the captain of Chennai is 120 wins and 79 losses while one match did not result.

Gavaskar also heaped praise on star batsman Virat Kohli, who has given Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) a good start to the season.

He said, “Virat Kohli is giving aggressive start to RCB at the beginning of the innings. A lot of credit goes to him for RCB’s brilliant start which saw the team post big scores. This is a good sign for RCB.
