Dhaka : A total of 48 Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders and workers have been sentenced to different terms of imprisonment in the case of the attack on the convoy of the then Leader of Opposition and current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Satikhra, Bangladesh in the year 2002. Four people, including former lawyer and BNP district president Habibul Islam Habib, were sentenced to life imprisonment and 44 others to seven years in prison. Judge Vishwanath Mandal of Satkhira Special Tribunal-3 pronounced the verdict on Tuesday after hearing the arguments of all the parties.
According to the statement of the case, on August 30, 2002, Hasina had gone to meet the wife of a freedom fighter. The fighter’s wife was raped and was admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital. Hasina was returning to Jashore after meeting the freedom fighter’s wife. Meanwhile, his convoy was attacked in Kalaroa Upazila of the district. Hasina narrowly escaped the attack, but about 12 Awami League leaders and workers and some journalists were injured. Around 15 to 20 vehicles were vandalized during the attack.
