Senate confirms Rowan Wilson’s appointment as New York’s first black Chief Justice

April 19, 2023

Albani: In the US, the New York Senate confirmed the appointment of Rowan Wilson as the state’s Chief Justice. He will be the first black Chief Justice of the state. Two months earlier, members rejected Governor Cathy Hochul’s initial candidate for the court’s top position. Since 2017, Wilson has served as an associate judge on the Court of Appeals, the top court in New York. He was chosen by Hochul earlier this month to head the seven-member court and oversee the state’s judicial system.

After this, the Senate stamped his name on Tuesday. State Senator Brad Hoylman-Siegal told the House that Judge Wilson has proven that he is one of the most thoughtful judges in the nation and in the history of the Court of Appeals. Brad Hoylman-Siegel is the chairman of the State Senate Judiciary Committee.

Hector LaSalle was previously chosen by Governor Hochul, but members of the Senate criticized him for his decisions as an appeals judge. In an unprecedented move, LaSalle’s candidacy was rejected by the Senate in February.
