Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

US evacuates all US diplomatic personnel and their families from Sudanese capital

The American and British military evacuated all diplomats and their families from the Sudanese capital. France announced on Sunday that it was also evacuating its diplomats.

Recall that on Saturday, President Joe Biden announced the suspension of the embassy in Khartoum due to the continuing fighting between the armed groups at war in Sudan.

“This tragic violence in Sudan has already claimed the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians,” Biden said in a statement released Saturday by the White House. “This is immoral and it must end. The warring parties must implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, ensure unimpeded humanitarian access, and respect the will of the people of Sudan. We are temporarily suspending the U.S. Embassy in Sudan, but our commitment to the people of Sudan and the future they aspire to remains unchanged.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said all American personnel had been safely evacuated and that the United States would continue to assist Americans in Sudan to ensure their safety.

Recall that the fighting, which has already claimed the lives of more than 400 people, broke out in Khartoum and other regions of the country on April 15, four years after the overthrow of dictator Omar al-Bashir.

Clashes broke out between army units led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan’s Sovereign Transitional Council, and the Rapid Support Force (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, which is the deputy head of the council.

Burhan and Dagalo are not respecting ceasefire agreements, including a three-day truce during Eid al-Fitr, which began on Friday.

US officials said on Saturday that the US military stationed in Djibouti had evacuated at least 100 people from the Sudanese capital using MH-47 Chinook helicopters within an hour.

Assistant Secretary of State John Bass said some Americans and citizens of other countries had managed to get from Khartoum to Port Sudan on the Red Sea.

Saudi Arabia has already evacuated citizens from Port Sudan, 650 kilometers (400 miles) from Khartoum. Jordan will use the same route for its citizens.

Egypt, which has more than 10,000 citizens in Sudan, has urged anyone outside Khartoum to visit the consulate in Port Sudan and the consular office in Wadi Halfa, on the border with Egypt, to prepare. to evacuation.
