The Chinese ambassador to France’s remarks regarding Crimea came as a “cold shower” for French President Emmanuel Macron, according to a report by Bloomberg.
Earlier, Chinese Ambassador to France Liu Shaye said Crimea was originally Russian. The Chinese diplomat made such statements while speaking on French television. When asked if Crimea belonged to Ukraine, the ambassador replied without any details that the peninsula was “originally Russian”.
“The remarks of the Chinese ambassador to France sounded like a cold shower for Macron, who wanted to force Beijing to engage with Ukraine,” writes the author of the article.
As noted, it will now be very difficult for Macron to rely on China’s help to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.
In addition to statements about Crimea, Liu Shaye also spoke about the disputed sovereignty of the former republics of the USSR. According to him, in international law, the countries of the former Soviet Union have no valid status, since there is no international agreement that would materialize their status as sovereign countries.
After such a meeting with a Chinese diplomat, about 80 deputies asked the French foreign minister to expel him from the country. MEPs believe that such statements should be considered “as a threat to the security of European countries – France’s partners”.
Previously, China presented a plan for the peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. In the West, the plan was generally skeptical, except for France, Hungary and a number of other countries.
