EU made ‘very strong’ statements in support of Georgia’s admission
Foreign Ministers of EU Member States have confirmed their support for Georgia’s European integration process. This was announced on Monday April 24 by the head of the Georgian Foreign Ministry, Ilya Darchiashvili.
The diplomat took part in the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council as a guest. In his own words, “almost everyone said they strongly support Georgia’s integration into the European family”. Moreover, during his meeting with the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, “very strong” statements of support for Georgia were made.
Darchiashvili noted that this is a strong incentive to continue the process of reforms necessary to synchronize Georgian legislation with EU standards. Tbilisi strives to ensure that the decision to admit Georgia into the EU is based on concrete and tangible results, the minister stressed.
European Council chief Charles Michel said earlier that the European Commission will soon publish a report on the progress of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia on the road to European integration. Based on this report, the politician promised to raise the issue of opening negotiations with the three countries on their admission to the EU.
At the same time, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili said that in case of repeated refusal to be admitted to the EU, the citizens of the state “consider themselves abandoned by Europe”.
