New York Times columnist Michael Schwirtz believes the counter-offensive in Ukraine may not bring the expected success. In his article, he notes that Ukraine must overcome protected Russian borders and solve problems with its own armed forces.
“Combat missions are scary. To succeed, Ukraine will have to overcome Russia’s well-fortified borders for ten months, but also the shortcomings of its army,” he said.
Schwirtz refers to the opinion of American officials who do not predict great changes during the battles in the event of a Ukrainian counter-offensive. In addition, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have faced problems in the form of reduced weapon stocks after many months of fighting. According to the journalist, the Ukrainian side is not very optimistic, given these problems and the long period of fighting.
