Back to the Future franchise star Michael J. Fox has made a candid confession to CBS Sunday Morning host Jane Polley. They notably talked about Parkinson’s disease, which the actor was diagnosed with in 1991, when he was at the zenith of fame. While receiving an honorary Oscar for Contribution to the Arts from friend and colleague Woody Harrelson onstage in November 2022, Fox mentioned that he and Harrelson “got hurt in the ’80s.”

Polly asked Michael Jay if this “damage” contributed to his Parkinson’s disease. “Yeah, most likely,” Fox replied. “I guess there’s a lot of ways that…I could hurt myself. I could bang my head. I could drink too much at a certain period of development. According to the actor, the occurrence of Parkinson’s disease is a combination of genetic and environmental factors. “Most likely I think I was exposed to some kind of chemical. We say genetics loads the gun and the environment pulls the trigger,” he added.
Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that disrupts dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. As a result, a person’s motor activity slows down, tremors occur, cognitive function deteriorates, etc.
