The Writers Guild of America said 11,500 screenwriters will take part in the sit-in on Tuesday.
Negotiations between the studios and writers, which began in March, failed to yield new signings before existing writers’ contracts expired shortly after midnight Tuesday at 12:01 a.m. PT.
The union told its members to immediately stop writing the script.
The Writers Guild of America board of directors unanimously voted to call the strike, which will begin at midnight, and said writers were facing an “existential crisis”.
The Motion Picture and Television Producers Alliance, the union that negotiates on behalf of studios and production companies, said Monday night that negotiations had not resulted in an agreement before the current contract expired.
