The coronavirus pandemic is over, World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Ghebreyesus has said. This was reported on the WHO’s Twitter account.
The WHO chief said that for more than a year the pandemic “has been on a downward trend”, the death rate is decreasing, the immunity of the population is increasing. “This trend has allowed most countries to return to the life we knew before COVID-19,” Ghebreyesus said.
The WHO Emergency Committee carefully considered the situation and on May 4 recommended that Ghebreyesus declare that COVID-19 is no longer a public health emergency of international concern.
According to him, this news means that it is time for countries to move from a state of emergency to the fight against COVID-19 as well as other infectious diseases. At the same time, the WHO chief noted that the coronavirus has not ceased to be a global threat to public health.
Ghebreyesus said at least 20 million people have died from the coronavirus since the pandemic began. “Last week, the coronavirus claimed one death every three minutes – and these are only the cases that we know of,” Ghebreyesus added.
The WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern in January 2020 and a pandemic in March of the same year.
WHO statement already commented at the Russian Ministry of Health. According to Deputy Health Minister Alexei Kuznetsov, the circulation of the virus is still ongoing and preventive measures remain relevant. He added that Russian doctors will continue to provide comprehensive medical care to patients with COVID-19.
