Deadly Ebola virus stored in the brain for years

Virologists have said that the dangerous Ebola virus can be stored in the brain for many years, subsequently causing death.

Such conclusions were presented by scientists after a long observation of infected animals. It turned out that the body runs the risk of becoming a victim of Ebola again, harboring a virus inside itself.

Practice shows that even the most modern treatment with monoclonal antibodies does not guarantee 100% protection.

Ebola occurs in the Congo, Guinea, transmitted between humans and monkeys. In 2021, cases of the disease occurred among those who had already had Ebola. The virus remained in the brain all this time. For example, this happened among macaques.

“We found that about 20% of monkeys that survived Ebola virus exposure after treatment with monoclonal antibodies still had a persistent infection,” the scientists said.

Most likely, combination therapy with both antibodies and antiviral is required for the full elimination of the virus. Writes about it IA Kulik with reference to Science Translational Medicine.
