Tufts University has developed a way to grow artificial meat from stem cells

May 12, 2023

Scientists from Tufts University have developed a technology for creating artificial meat from stem cells.

The scientific discovery was reported by the journal ACS Synthetic Biology. The invention is based on the principle of endlessly dividing stem cells, thanks to which, perhaps, it will be possible to feed millions of people around the world.

Scientists took stem cells from animals, they divide a maximum of about 50 times, after which they grow old and die. The reason for this is the wear and tear of telomeres, which can be stopped by increasing the lifespan of stem cells.

From the creation took place in two stages. First, scientists engineered bovine stem cells to constantly renew their telomeres.

Then they were edited so that they would continuously produce a protein that stimulates an important stage of division. This method significantly accelerated the process of cell formation, but it has drawbacks.

In particular, muscle stem cells are not the classic piece of meat that we are all used to. For the transformation of cells into a complete product, not only division and growth, but also maturation is required. While this problem has not been solved, but scientists intend to correct the situation in the near future.

It should be noted that the cells are absolutely safe for consumption. The process of storage, preparation and digestion successfully stops their reproduction, writes Lenta.ru .
