Folding phones .. 3 reasons for the exaggerated prices

May 21, 2023

The phone looked promising in terms of appearance and features, but its price was shocking to consumers.

One user wrote on Twitter, “My first car cost me $1800, the same price as this phone.” Another wrote: “Google has lost its mind.”

For comparison, you can buy a Google Pixel phone, Pixel tablet, and Pixel watch for less than the new foldable Pixel phone, which starts at $1,800.

However, the problem of the high price of foldable phones is not exclusive to Google Pixel. The Samsung Galaxy Fold started at $2,000 when it launched in 2020.

For comparison, the new iPhone 14 starts at $800.

But why is the price of foldable smartphones so high?

expensive screen

• The flexible screen of foldable phones is one of the main reasons for the high cost of these phones, according to a CNN report.

• Flexible screens require more engineering and are much more expensive to manufacture than conventional screens.

Luxurious portions

• According to “CNN”, other components specific to foldable devices also lead to increased costs.

• For example, the PixelFold moves on a specially designed hinge at a 180 degree angle.

• The entire mechanism has been moved from the bottom of the screen to improve dust resistance and reduce the overall thickness of the device.

• It also requires complex engineering and expensive manufacturing.

“very special” product

• Foldable smartphones are still in their infancy, which is why companies do a lot of research and development to find the perfect product.

• High research and development costs increase the price of the product.

unknown future

• The future is unknown for these devices, most apps are still unmodified for foldable devices, even Google’s main competitor, Apple, has not yet entered the field of these devices.

• High price is one of the factors limiting the size of the foldable phone market.

• Today, these phones represent only 2% of the global phone market.
