exercise reduces the amount of bleeding in a stroke by 50%

October 2, 2025

Scientists from the University of Gothenburg found that exercise reduces the amount of bleeding in the event of a severe stroke.

The journal Stroke and Vascular Neurology spoke about the scientific discovery. It turned out that in people who regularly play sports, the amount of bleeding in the brain during hospitalization was on average 50% less.

This was indicated by the data of 686 people who were hospitalized with intracerebral hemorrhage between 2014 and 2019. Participants were asked about the frequency of physical activity before hospitalization, and by sports, doctors meant even walking, cycling, swimming, dancing and even gardening, but at least four times a week.

As a result, it turned out that those people who maintained an active lifestyle had lower amounts of bleeding during a stroke. Moreover, such a correlation was noticed by experts for the first time and previously such a relationship was not recorded either in animals or in humans.

Bleeding volumes were reduced both in the deep areas of the brain, which are associated with high blood pressure, and in the more superficial areas associated with dementia. Such findings will allow scientists to understand how to prevent and deal with stroke in the future. Lenta.ru .
