India ready to cooperate in Suriname’s progress and development: President Droupadi Murmu

Paramaribo: President Draupadi Murmu said that India is ready to share its experiences with Suriname and cooperate in its progress and development. He said that both the countries may be geographically separated from each other but are connected through shared history and heritage. President Draupadi Murmu reached Suriname on Sunday on a three-day state visit. This is his first foreign trip after taking over as the President in July last year. President Draupadi Murmu and her counterpart Chandrika Prasad Santokhi on Tuesday addressed an event hosted by the Indian Embassy here for the Indian community and Friends of India.

Before the event, a two-minute silence was observed to pay tribute to those killed in the train accident in Odisha’s Balasore. At least 278 people died and more than 900 people were injured in this train accident. The President in his address underlined the changes and progress India has made in various fields including infrastructure, digital services, new technology and said that India is ready to share its experiences with Suriname and cooperate in its progress and development. .

Draupadi Murmu said, ‘We may be separated from each other geographically but are connected to each other through shared history and heritage. Suriname and the Suriname people have a special place in our hearts. All of you are working as a bridge for friendship and cooperation between the two countries. In a way, you are India’s permanent ambassador to Suriname.” The President said that the priority of the Government of India is to build permanent links with the Indian community around the world.

He said, ‘We are proud to see that people of Indian origin in Suriname have reached the pinnacle of service.’ He mentioned that President Santokhi is of Indian origin. President Draupadi Murmu said that it is a special thing for him to be a part of the celebration of 150 years of the arrival of Indians in Suriname and it is a matter of pride for us that Indians in Suriname have reached the top level. He said that Indians are making a significant contribution to the development of Suriname including in the economic, social and cultural fields.
